Bodegas Pittacum market ten thousand bottles of Tres Obispos, a wine they hope will recover some of rosé´s lost prestige as the perfect accompaniment for vegetables, salads and rice dishes
A. Calvo
ARGANZA
According to local legend, the disputes between the bishops of Astorga, Lugo and Oviedo and the fine wines they washed them down with give their name to the mountain where they met, and also to Bodegas Pittacum´s rosé wine, launched with ten thousand bottles. The goal of this move is to recover some of rosé's lost prestige, according to the winery´s technical director, Alfredo Marqués. The wine is ideal for accompanying vegetables, salads and rice dishes, he added.
The bright red Mencía grapes are grown on old vineyards – some of them 80 years old or more – in cool areas, giving them their characteristic freshness and flavour. Tres Obispos rosé won the gold medal at the New Wines 2008 awards. Competing against wineries from all Spain´s designations of origin, it was the only rosé to be awarded a top prize.
Bodegas Pittacum´s are mostly aged in casks made of French and American oak, although a new Project is underway to use oak from the Riaño mountain area, and another to use trees grown in Salamanca province.
The flagship products of the winery, based in Arganza and a member of the Terras Gauda group, are still Pittacum Barrica and Pittacum Aurea, the grapes for which are selected from special strains on vineyards with excellent soil and climate qualities.
Wines
Unique wines that reflect the Bierzo district
The Chairman of Terras Gauda Bodegas Pittacum, José María Fonseca, said yesterday that their Tres Obispos rosé «recovers the tradition of the Bierzo district», as well as demonstrating the unique qualities of the district and its products.
A team of fifteen people pick the grapes, which are grown on seven hectares of vineyards, collecting only the bunches that will be processed the same day. This careful selection ensures that this year's grapes will be «perfect and well balanced», Alfredo Marqués said.
Bodegas Pittacum are now focusing on new products with local grape varieties, such as Alicante, «which is set to repeat what happened in 1999 with the Mencía grapes,» he said, referring to a variety that was found to be perfectly suited for making crianza aged wines.
José María Fonseca said that Bodegas Pittacum is now «making an effort» to sell its wines in Northern European markets, «where they have had a good reception», and the United States. They are also starting to do well in new markets, such as Asia, and the chairman of the Arganza-based winery said that even in Spain wines from the Bierzo district still have a great deal left to do.

«Tres obispos», Pittacum´s latest launch ![]()
Yesterday the Arganza-based winery presented its new rosé made with Mencía grapes
Francisco Labarga | Arganza
Yesterday the Pittacum winery, based in Arganza, launched its new product, «Tres Obispos», a young wine under the Bierzo designation of origin that is a 100% Mencía-based rosé, uniquely in an area where reds reign supreme.
The result is a refreshing, cheerful wine, with a test run of 3,000 bottles, although 10,000 in all will be produced, the winery´s technical director, Alfredo Marqués, explained.
The name «Tres Obispos» refers to an old legend that tells of a meeting between the bishops of three neighbouring dioceses: Orense, Lugo and Astorga, and represents a firm commitment towards rosé wines from the very beginning, selecting the vineyards to be used to produce it. The first wine made in this way was recognised instantly, winning a gold medal at the New Wine Awards 2008.
Otherwise, apart from its organoleptic qualities, the new Pittacum wine follows exactly the same stringent manufacturing and quality standards as all the Bierzo-based winery´s other products: the excellent Pittacum Barrica and the exceptional Pittacum Aurea. These standards are in line with the policy set by the winery´s parent company, the Galician Bodegas Terras Gauda, as explained by their senior Management, headed by the chairman, accompanied by the managing director, Enrique Costas, and sales director, Augusto Borrás.
Grown in some of the most spectacular, sun-drenched parts of the Bierzo district, such as El Cereixal, in Villadecanes, Pittacum´s grapes are a guarantee that wines of proven quality will be made. The winery´s products are now taking advantage of the international penetration enjoyed by its parent company, Terras Gauda, in the Rías Baixas designation of origin, to conquer markets that would have been unthinkable not long ago, such as Canada, China, Japan and Laos, soon to be joined by Vietnam, South Korea, Hong Kong, the Philippines, Singapore and Malaysia.
Although ambitious, this is a move that deserves to succeed, which it surely will, because of its audacity and frankness.

The Bierzo-based winery launches a new wine, the rosé Tres Obispos, in a year marked by International expansion, penetrating eight new markets in Asia while consolidating its position in Spain
B. FERNÁNDEZ
||| 2008 is an important year for Pittacum not only because of the launch of a new wine. The Arganza-based winery, which came to fame with the wine of the same name, has conquered the demanding Asian market, penetrating eight national markets in the region. The sales network of the Galician firm Terras Gauda, which has owned the winery since 2002, has introduced the Bierzo Mencía wines into China, Japan, Laos, Taiwan, Vietnam, South Korea, Hong Kong, and Singapore, with launches also planned soon for the Philippines and Malaysia. Pittacum has also increased its presence on the North American market in recent months, with the signing in 2007 of new global distribution deals for Canada, penetrating the SAQ and LCBO monopolies there. The winery´s position in the United States has also been strengthened following a distribution deal with the company AY Brands, a member of the Spanish Codorniu group.
The winery´s sales activity has also been intense in the Caribbean and central European regions, with exports now heading for Cuba and the firm´s position being consolidated in the UK and Switzerland, its main foreign markets. The Bierzo-based winery, which produces the 100% Mencía wines Pittacum Barrica, Pittacum Aurea and Tres Obispos, is present in over 20 international markets and throughout Spain. The total turnover of the group, which is chaired by José María Fonseca and run by Enrique Costas, the managing director, and made up of Bodegas Terras Gauda, Bodegas Pittacum and A Rosaleira, was 10.12 million euros in 2007, achieved by a team of 80 employees. Total profits were 1.165 million euros. Pittacum is run by Alfredo Marqués.

Pittacum launches Tres Obispos, a 100% Mencía-based rosé, gold-medal winner at the New Wines Awards 2008
![]()
This year the Arganza-based winery has launched its wines in eight national markets in Asia and consolidated its positions in Europe and the USA
Last week Pittacum launched its new wine, the rosé Tres Obispos, which won the gold medal at the New Wines Awards 2008, competing against wines from all Spain´s regions with designation of origin. Tres Obispos was the only rosé to win a top prize at the event.
The wine´s name comes from a legendary meeting between the bishops of Astorga, Orense and Lugo at the confluence of the three provinces, in the Bierzo district, to settle their differences.
Tres Obispos is made with 100% Mencía grapes and the winery is committed to pushing this wine despite the dramatic fall in rosé sales in recent years. «We though that this was because rosés weren´t being made with the right grapes. Rosé has always been made with grapes from highly productive new vineyards, hoping to make full-bodied rosés with red grapes, but you have to go right back to the grape on the vine to do it properly. A rosé needs a much lighter, more aromatic grape, one that´s less ripe than a red, with lots of aromas reflecting the grape variety and high acidity. So you have to design it from the beginning by choosing the right vineyard,» Pittacum´s technical director, Alfredo Marqués, said. He added that at the Arganza-based winery rosé «isn´t going to be a by-product of red wine, nor the down-market product in our range.»
However, the fate of rosé has been a different story in Europe, where consumption is on the increase. As a result of this, Three Obispos is mainly intended for export. It has already been very well received in Belgium, the Netherlands and the UK. Current production is set at 3,000 bottles, although a total of 10,000 bottles are planned by the end of this year´s harvest. Marqués considers that the success of rosé wines in Europe is «a reaction against the new wave of modern wines that are too extractive and too full-bodied. We´re seeing a resurgence of consumers who want to go back to drinking something refreshing, pleasant and thirst-quenching.»
The winery opted to make their new rosé with 100% Mencía grapes because they bring out the character of the wine better than any red. «We wanted to make a wine that wasn´t too heavy, too sweet, too flowery, but one that had Mencía´s fruitiness, with presence in the mouth, a more intense colour and similar characteristics to a white in terms of its being refreshing, thanks to the fruit and its acidity.» As a result, he said, a rosé has been achieved that faithfully reproduces the Mencía grape, with hints of red and purple fruits. But it´s also a wine with body and acidity.
Marqués said that the wine is also ideal for accompanying many dishes where the combinations often aren´t to everyone´s taste, such as vegetables, salads, conserves, fresh cheeses and rice dishes.
Tres Obispos is mainly intended for export.

Pittacum barrica and Pittacum áurea
Besides Tres Obispos, Pittacum continues its market presence with Pittacum Barrica, a 100% Mencía wine, made from a blend of grapes from completely different areas which is matured for six months in French- and American-oak vats. Every year the winery replaces a third of the casks it uses. This wine has won prizes this year at the Decanter World Awards in London, the Finger Lakes International Wine Competition in Rochester, New York, the Wine Masters Challenge in Estoril, Portugal, and the 2008 Selection event in Palma, Majorca.
Pittacum Áurea, another 100% Mencía wine, is made only from grapes from a vineyard that is over 70 years old. It is aged for 14 months in the finest French-oak casks, all of which are renewed every year.
Pittacum conquers Asia
Pittacum opened the doors of their winery to the media in the middle of the grape-picking season. The firm´s chairman, José María Fonseca, and managing director, Enrique Costas, announced that 2008 has seen the winery conquer eight Asian countries, with their products now being sold in China, Japan, Laos, Taiwan, Vietnam, South Korea, Hong Kong and Singapore. The winery also plans to launch in the Philippines and Malaysia.
Meanwhile, Pittacum has also increased its presence on the North American market, thanks to a distribution agreement with A.V. Branels of the Codorniu group, and entry into the Canadian market via the SAQ and LCBO monopolies.
Pittacum has also begun to export its wines to Cuba and consolidated its presence in the UK and Switzerland.
10.12 M euros in sales
The overall turnover of the group, which is made up of Bodegas Terras Gauda, Bodegas Pittacum and the vegetable-canning firm A Rosaleira, was 10.12 million euros in 2007. The total profit reported was 1.16 million euros. The group has 80 employees.

El Bierzo's wines on the Marco Polo road
El Bierzo's wines continue to surprise us. News has just come in of the success that the winery Pittacum has been having in the Far East. The firm's participation at the Vinexpo International Wine Fair in Hong Kong has given a major boost to their expansion in Vietnam, South Korea, the Philippines, Singapore and Malaysia, where the winery's products have been doing very well indeed.
Bodegas Pittacum, which has been owned by Bodegas Terras Gauda since 2002, is now present in 20 international markets, having increased its export sales by 18% last year.
In 2007 the wine group reached global-distribution agreements in Canada to penetrate the SAQ and LCBO monopolies with its wines Pittacum Barrica, Pittacum Aurea and Tres Obispos, which have been received very positively.
The Canadian wine expert Michel Phaneuf has noted the aromatic profile and magnificent flavour of El Bierzo's wines.
Viñedos y Bodegas Pittacum's philosophy is a clear one: to create wines with personality that are unique yet uphold the character of mencía grapes and the area and climate where they are grown.
Personality, regularity and quality are the three key factors that define the winery's commitment, and the vineyard's productivity is a key factor in achieving them.
The winery has chosen only vines that are 50 to 80 years old, growing in poor soils with satisfactory yields. Tending operations such as pruning, lead removal and bunch cleaning allows the winery to maintain an ideal microclimate for each plant to encourage ripening.
Pittacum has been experimenting with oak from different sources and with different toasting levels for its casks to optimise the results for each type of wine produced. Once the wine has been made it is clarified with egg white and then undergoes coarse filtration, before being bottled and taken for maturing.
The overall turnover of the group, which employs 80 professionals and consists of Bodegas Terras Gauda, Bodegas Pittacum and the vegetable canning firm A Rosaleira, was 10.12 million euros.

Mencía wine in the Far East
Pittacum set to conquer the «Asian tigers»
The wines made by the Arganda-based winery, a member of the Terras Gauda group, presented with a fanfare at the Vinexpo International Fair in Hong Kong.
R.Arias PONFERRADA
El Bierzo's quality wines have been coming to the world's attention. It's no longer a surprise to find them on the menu of a luxury restaurant in almost any far-flung corner of the globe. But until now Asia has proved to be a particularly distant and difficult nut to crack.
To bring it closer, Bodegas Pittacum are presenting their flagship wines at the Vinexpo International Fair in Hong Kong. Pittacum Barrica, Aurea and Tres Obispos are being presented by the delegation from Terras Gauda, the group to which the Arganda-based winery belongs, as part of its drive to win over consumers in the countries known as the "Asian tigers" because of their booming economies, including South Korea, Malaysia and Singapore.
At Vinexpo the mencía-based wines have been extremely well received, according to sources at Terras Gauda's sales department. The Galician firm is pleased with Pittacum's recent performance in such markets as China, Japan and Laos.
But the challenge now is to continue to expand in the Far East, making the most of the excellent opportunities for growth in Vietnam and the Philippines, as well as South Korea, Hong Kong, Singapore and Malaysia.
Pittacum, owned by Terras Gauda since 2002, is currently present on 20 international markets. Last year its export sales grew by 18%. In Canada, for example, the firm has managed to penetrate key beverage monopolies and such products as Pittacum Barrica 2004 have drawn the attention of the most demanding wine critics.
The Terras Gauda group, best known for its albariño-based wines, reported a turnover of 10.2 million euros last year.
Having conquered China, Japan and Laos, the challenge now is to penetrate Vietnam, South Korea, Singapore, Malaysia and the Philippines.

Bodegas Pittacum, to Conquer Holland and Mexico
Wines from Bodegas Pittacum in Arganza del Bierzo just disembarked in Holland and Mexico to compete in these demanding markets. They did so, backed by the special mention received in the XIV Concurso Enológico Internacional Vinitaly, inaugurated in Verona on 6 April.

Pittacum Barrica 2003; a red wine with all the essential flavour of El Bierzo
The district of El Bierzo in the provinced of Leon has always been a land of wines, but until just a few years ago, these were completely unknow for most people living outside the province. However, thanks to de dedication of winery-owners such as José María Fonseca, president of Bodegas Terras Gauda, it has been possible to make wines from the Mencía vine variety, wich bears the hallmark of their own excellent personality, without losing the characteristic note of the area.
This is the case of Pittacum Barrica 2003, a red wine that is especially recommended for all those who want to "find out" what a good "Bierzo" is like. The producticity and age of the wine are key factors in achieving a quality wine. The Terras Gauda El Bierzo vineyards only use old vines, aged between 50 and 80 years, which grow on their own land, and in the correct production quantities.
Purple in colour, with a deep mauve edge, the drops are colourful and dense. The wine is densely covered, and is a very fruity wine, with notes that are reminiscent of ripened, black fruits, strawberry jam and black cherries. Its aromas are the result of the aging of the wine on lees, and extended to include others the tosasted and high-quality wood. Soft, meaty and ripe in the mouth, with an important sweet, ripe, pleasant tannin base, followed by a great burst of sweetness. Its aftertaste is very complex, and varied, with the reappearance of elegant toasted hints, vanilla notes, the quality of wich blend perfectly with the fresh taste of the fruit.

Mencía Creation
The area of El Bierzo is crossed by the river Sil, which has been famous since ancient times for the gold that is found in its sands. The vines grown here are as old as the landscape, and possibly just as old as the gold in the sandstone hills. Today, however, its treasure is the red wine that comes from the Mencía grape, a hitherto scorned variety. Many reputed wineries have flourished around the attraction of this new source of wealth, one of wich is Pittacum, owned by the Terras Gauda Group. The winery is not new to the business, but has found it difficult to attain the standard of quality required of its excellent ancient vineyards.
This Pittacum Áurea 2003 has the right concentration, but is somewhat thinner, with a more agile body and a note of wood thas is still difficult to determine, and with a better elaboration that in previous years. Its aroma is a profuse explosion of fruity notes with a taste of well-ripened grapes, and reminiscent of fruits of the forest with a hint of minerals and the clear presence of oak mingled and toasted hints. The fruity impact is reproduced more densely and freshly in the mouth, where the succulent tannis have a certain harshness at first, needing time to sweeten. The final aftertaste is that of a great wine, evoking and inciting.

TERRAS GAUDA´S PRIDE IN EL BIERZO
The classic Galician firm shows off the success story of Pittacum, the Arganda-based winery in its stable, recently selected by the Norwegian wine monopoly
The 2003 wine, the five medals in recent international competitions, and now the selection by the Norwegian wine monopoly were used yesterday by the Galician firm Terras Gauda to make public its firm belief in its El Bierzo business, the PITTACUM winery.
The chairman of the company, whose headquarters are in O Rosal, José María Fonseca, and the company´s key executives showed the Spanish trade press and local media around Pittacum´s facilities in Arganda and its latest offerings, Pittacum wine, aged in oak for 6 months, and Pittacum Aurea, aged in oak for 14 months.
Fonseca, whose firm Terras Gauda reported a turnover of 7 million euros last year and has 160 hectares of its own vineyards, highlighted the significance of the Mencía grape variety as one of the most interesting on the current market, and pointed to the firm´s Pittacum adventure as a combination of the Pontevedra firm´s philosophy of giving priority to quality above all else..
Alfredo Marqués, Pittacum´s Technical Director and, together with Andrés Camporro, one of the firm´s local partners, also stressed this concept, mentioning the variety of the soil both on the Arganda-based winery´s own 7 hectares (with vines that are between 70 and 90 years old) and on the 15 hectares of land of local winegrowers from which grapes are also obtained, in accordance with a strictly defined protocol.
